I remember my first concert back in junior high school, it was Ted Nugent. He came flying out over the audience in a loincloth howling away like the madman he is. I was hooked, and soon after that I’d go almost every weekend up to New Haven to camp out for good seats, Van Halen, Queen, The Police, all the big arena rock bands that came through…it was part of growing up, something exciting to do in a pretty boring area of the country for a restless teen, and it inspired me to get into playing music (later on punk rock gave me the confidence to actually do it in public). Those were the days of big hair and men dressed in ridiculous outfits playing God on an extravagant stage. We were happy to help Portland Oregon photographer Pat Goebel set up a simple ecommerce website to sell high quality prints of his colorful images of this wondrous era of rock music. Take a look through Pat’s website and if you like what you see pick up a print or two for someone nostalgic in your life. They will enjoy it.

WordPress Website for Portland Film “Rid of Me”

How cool is the local film scene here to have the filmmaker/acting team of Katie O’Grady and James Westby? Their latest film Rid of Me was recently screened to great reviews at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film features all sorts of local Portland talent romping through a romantic comedy about a young woman named Meris and her struggles to fit in. The film stars Katie O’Grady and we can only wonder why she has not broken big time yet…We were contracted to take their poster artwork and turn it into a fully functional WordPress CMS with a news section they could easily update. We worked in a rotating slideshow to give visitors and instant feel for this wonderful film.

Website Launch for Deep Cello Portland Coffee Roasters

We worked with Portland designer Giuseppe Lipari of Studio Lipari and the Deep Cello coffee crew to set up an online presence with this new ecommerce website. The biggest challenge for us was we needed to craft a good shopping solution using phpurchase which was their plugin of choice. You can order their delicious hand crafted beans directly from the website and have them delivered to your doorstep! Studio Lipari provided us with a beautiful design that captures the hand made quality of the product crafted by local roaster Justin Kagan (also one heck of a cellist with the Portland Cello Project). Beam yourself over to Deep Cello and learn what they are all about….good people making good coffee with lots of love.

Misty Mountain Morning

The wind last night has cleared away all the pea soup up here in Forest Park. It is interesting to see how the dynamics of our surroundings have been altered now that it is all gone. The leaves have fallen, the trees are nude. Here are a shots I snapped up on Skyline a few mornings ago, it was a thick muddy ride to get up there, but the fog was just as thick.

So please update your address book for us if necessary. Bitclone LLC physical realm base camp is now 8946 NW Mills, Portland Oregon 97231. It’s been a big and refreshing change for us to get back to nature. There are many amazing trails up into the woods, and we’ve just begun exploring it all! Penny (our dog who thinks she’s a chicken) has been loving the hiking and the wildlife in general. Here are a few pictures of the new diggs, drop by and visit sometime.

WordPress 3.0 new features on the road to CMS perfection!

So I had been writing this big post about WordPress 3.0 coming out, and how we were so sneaky as to be running a release candidate on our site…Then we got busy and by the time I came back they went and released the final version! The new version 3.0 is called “Thelonious” after the great jazzman and purveyor of awesome hats I assume. I am going to try to do some specific feature updates as I encounter them while upgrading our small fleet of WordPress clients! Some of the most noteworthy additions I have been testing include the merging of MU (multiple user version) into the standard version. That and the new custom post types alone make this a pretty huge upgrade and really push WordPress closer to being the perfect full CMS solution. My only concern is the application will get too bloated, as they continue to add to it, so I am going to also run some speed tests to compare this new version. Results to follow shortly I promise!

If you have not seen “Straight No Chaser” the Monk documentary directed by Eastwood…I’d recommend it.

Neil Young Tribute Benefit for Haiti

Hey Portlanders! We are working with Someday Lounge (one of the coolest clubs in Portland) to put together this benefit concert for Haiti. We have organized nine really great local bands who will be doing renditions of their favorite Neil young songs, with all the profits going to benefit earthquake relief in Haiti (i’m sure you heard about that right?). you can catch me playing bass with miss Lana Rebel and her crew from various bands. tickets are on sale now and you can get more info from this webpage I set up.

Hard to believe 10 years ago we were all (well some of those people) worried about the great digital disaster Y2K! We are fortunate to still be around and to be celebrating 5 years of our little design agency Bitclone here in Portland Oregon. What’s been the key to our success? Well in addition to a meticulous obsession with new technologies and how they affect design, I believe it is our desire to provide a personal commitment to serving our clients. My grandfather was an amazing and inspiring human being who ran a Ford dealership in Old Saybrook CT. He had clients all across the country and he was often driving to places like Florida to personally deliver their cars to them! The man was always on the move, he would take these 15-20 minute power naps to recharge, but then pow he’s back up mowing the lawn, tending his huge garden, or helping someone out with a small task. He lived to a feisty old 93 years of age, take what you will from that and let’s rock 2010!

Kaibo Zonshinzu- Amazing anatomical illustration

As a design professional and an artist I’ve always been fascinated with medical illustration, and these great paintings are really remarkable documents that transcend above the ordinary. They are really beautiful and grotesque, created in 1819 by Kyoto-area physician/artist Yasukazu Minagaki (1784-1825). The paintings were studies created from actual corpses which were actually the remains of recently beheaded criminals, and it is the grotesque expressions which really makes them stand out in this time period. There are two scrolls of 83 paintings currently hosted at the Keio University Library. Stick a fork in it- Great yard prank!

Alex was recently walking about with a friend of hers here in Portland when she spotted this yard oddity. It appeared that the entire front yard of this house had been bombarded by flying forks! We were perplexed as to why anyone would decorate their yard on purpose in such a manner so I did a quick search, and apparently this is a somewhat popular prank to play on someone around the time of evening ground freezing! You stick all the forks in prong side first and then when the ground freezes obviously they are rather difficult to remove…My initial thoughts were it just looked pretty cool! I am not sure who these people pissed off, but it sure looks like they got pretty solidly pranked.
