Well we just pulled the switch here and upgraded to WordPress 3.2. It’s a pretty hefty upgrade, and our Media Temple DV server is always a bit finicky when I run WordPress upgrades, however all went pretty well (You can feel free to contact us if you need help upgrading your WordPress system). The new dashboard is quite a big change, and a few things to note with this upgrade.

The WordPress team has officially dropped support for IE6 (hooray I say) and they now include a little browser check right there in the dashboard to help give you a little poke if your browser is in need of an update (you’ll see in the screenshot my version of Firefox is outdated…yes I know, shame on me, I was waiting for a 1Password update). Next thing of import, your server will now need php5 AND mySQL 5. This will require those of you running older Media Temple Gridservers to upgrade. I’m sure MT support phones have been ringing off the hook, and they have already been addressing the issue diligently. As a matter of fact they just posted a video to Facebook which should help you on your way.

Last bit of advice should always be the first bit of advice. BACK SHIT UP! You’ll feel better about the whole process.

Here is a screenshot of the new Admin Dashboard, pretty slick!

How cool is the local film scene here to have the filmmaker/acting team of Katie O’Grady and James Westby? Their latest film Rid of Me was recently screened to great reviews at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film features all sorts of local Portland talent romping through a romantic comedy about a young woman named Meris and her struggles to fit in. The film stars Katie O’Grady and we can only wonder why she has not broken big time yet…We were contracted to take their poster artwork and turn it into a fully functional WordPress CMS with a news section they could easily update. We worked in a rotating slideshow to give visitors and instant feel for this wonderful film.

We worked with Portland designer Giuseppe Lipari of Studio Lipari and the Deep Cello coffee crew to set up an online presence with this new ecommerce website. The biggest challenge for us was we needed to craft a good shopping solution using phpurchase which was their plugin of choice. You can order their delicious hand crafted beans directly from the website and have them delivered to your doorstep! Studio Lipari provided us with a beautiful design that captures the hand made quality of the product crafted by local roaster Justin Kagan (also one heck of a cellist with the Portland Cello Project). Beam yourself over to Deep Cello and learn what they are all about….good people making good coffee with lots of love.

Back when we lived in sun soaked Tucson Arizona I had the pleasure of playing a few gigs on bass with Topless Opry. An honest down and dirty country outfit led by the cantankerous and deep toned Hank Topless. His dark songwriting and accomplished guitar picking have carried on into his solo act as Hank Topless, and we recently helped him design and launch a new website with help from WordPress and the excellent Gigpress plugin, which helps musicians manage and post shows and tours. If you’re ever in Tucson and you see a tall dapper cowboy with a gruff voice singing the country blues over at the Red Room or Congress…buy him a cold one.

So I was just trying to update some WordPress plugins and the new automatic update system went all fubar on me. It claimed my ftp info was incorrect and sent the site into permanent “maintenence mode” which might be frightening for someone updating their site obviously as you simply get that nice message above on a blank page…no way to access the admin again. Here are the solutions. First to get the site back, look in whatever directory is your root install for a hidden file .maintenance (note you’ll need to be able to view hidden files in your ftp program). Once you find it just delete that bugger and the site should be back. I found I had to go into the wp-settings.php file and comment out line 50 which runs the function “wp_maintenance();” in order to be able to update the plugins…for some reason it kept not accepting my ftp info and adding that file…wonky.

So it’s fairly common knowledge that it’s a bad idea to put your email address in a mailto: tag unprotected on your website right? The wicked spammers have nasty little web bots that will scan the code of a page looking for that tag, or even your unlinked email address (they can tell from the formatting of it). One way to protect yourself is to use javascript to encode your address and hide it. There are a few plugins for WordPress that will automatically do this for you. One we have used for a few clients is CryptX (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/cryptx/). All you need to do is install it and activate it, then it will filter through all your pages and cloak your addresses for you. Excellent work, hats off to plugin developer and spam warrior Ralf Weber.

It’s amazing how fast the world of business, and seemingly the world in general, has changed in my lifetime. This is, of course, heavily due to first the personal computer revolution, and secondly the internet boom. I graduated from Boston University in 1987 with a graphic design degree which gave me the ability to hand-paint fonts! Needless to say, it quickly became obvious to me that unless I started learning how to use computers I would be left behind as an artist and a designer.

In addition to designing and developing websites I also run a small business, which has opened up a whole other area of evolution and education for me. I interact directly with every client, and when I am approached by a potential customer some of the first questions are generally:

“Help me understand the process of building our new website.”

“How long does it take?”

“What are the costs involved in this?”

So let’s hope this post will begin to illustrate one of Bitclone’s basic processes – developing a WordPress CMS-based website. It should provide something of an overview, and help you get started in thinking about your project and some of the questions you’ll need to answer. We feel it is important to point out that every job is different, and part of our goal is to help you maintain your company’s unique identity among your competition. Having said that, there are some common points of focus we have identified through experience, and can discuss here.

The initial consultation or discovery phase.

We love hats!

First off, we need to define your basic needs and expectations regarding your website, and come to a conclusion about the scope of the project. Most of our initial consultations are done via email. The first discussion focuses on some basic questions (examples below) covering information that will help us to clarify the parameters of the project. We prefer to do this initial question and answer session by email if possible, as we are a small company, and our two employees wear many different hats (we actually love hats!).

Phone conversations quite simply take our focus away from our numerous daily tasks, some of which are time sensitive. Email allows us have this conversation at the most convenient times for both of us, as well as providing a paper(less) trail surrounding the project. If you prefer the telephone, we of course want your business and will take your call! We are always happy to accommodate your communication preference, and through experience we have found the medium of email to be most efficient for your time and ours. Your responses to some of the preliminary questions can help us narrow down our focus of conversation, making contact more efficient and on point.

Do you currently have an existing website?

If so, do you have any dynamic applications running on your website such as WordPress, or other custom php applications?

Do you currently have ownership of a domain name, and hosting for your website?

If you don’t have a website does your company have branding in place? By this we mean minimally logo and color scheme.

What is the expected timeline of this project? Would you deem it a rush job, or something planned with ample time for development and testing?

Will you be providing all of the initial content for your website? (copy, images, pdf’s, etc.) We find this is an often overlooked element by clients seeking a new website.

After you have contacted us and answered the initial round of questions, you will receive an email response (usually within 2 working days) in which we will let you know if we feel we can complete your job in the timeframe you have outlined. Depending on how much information you have provided, we might be able to provide an initial quote for our services, or we may request more information. Once we have agreed on a quote for services and a timeline, we can move on to discuss contracts and schedule, if necessary. For many small website maintenance jobs a verbal contract is fine, however, we like to be as professional as possible and get everything ironed out in writing so both of our expectations are clearly defined and kept in check. At this point in the new client website build process we also like to get 50% of our estimated fees in advance, allowing us to commit to adding you to our schedule.

Ok, on to the fun stuff now!

Design and Development Process.

I love design and development; it’s what we do best, and must be part of why we are still in business after 6 years! We love building and improving processes, which is integral to a successfully designed website or application. 15 years of designing, directing designers as an art director, and developing for the web have taught me a few things about what a good design for the web should accomplish. There are certain elements that are simply standard design practice for us at this time – clean, easy to locate, consistent navigation site-wide, for example. If you have specific art direction or styles you would like to offer to the process, now would be the time to input those! If not, don’t worry, we have plenty of experience to help guide you in the right direction. We can visit some of your competitors, discuss your industry, and develop the right stylistic approach to best help brand your company.

In some cases we will ask clients to provide images, or we might need to visit some online stock agencies to help develop the best design. Fortunately there are plenty of very affordable choices these days thanks to sites like iStockphoto. We will initially present you with one or two design comps for review, and we can then have a meeting or a phone call to discuss final revisions. We find this presentation of two design possibilities based on initial client input is adequate for most clients, however we can extend this design process as necessary.

Next we move on to the website development process, which can be handled in a few ways depending on your hosting situation and whether or not you have an existing website in place. If your existing website is static, we can usually build your new WordPress site right on your server in a subdirectory. This allows us to switch over to your beautiful new site very quickly once we are ready to launch. In other cases we will set up a development server, where we will develop the initial code and transfer your existing content to the development site. Then we will back-up and replace your existent site with the new WordPress driven website. Working from a development server and then transferring the site usually causes a few hours of downtime, so we schedule the move for when your site is off peak hours.

How long does it take?

This depends on a few key variables including the scope of the project, getting the required materials from the client in a timely fashion, and how busy we currently are in-house with other commitments. We can design and code an entire small business website from scratch generally within 2 weeks from the start date, provided we have full client cooperation.

How much will it cost?

With every project we get better at estimating just how long the job will take, which allows us to provide you with an accurate cost quote. Estimating hours is a bit of a science and a bit of an art – we strive to make it more of a science each time. To design and develop a brand new custom WordPress based website from scratch usually runs $1500-$2500 depending on the depth of the site and the customization involved.

One of the great things about using an open-source platform like WordPress is that there are many additional plug-in functionalities already developed and available. This helps us keep the costs down, and allows more focused time on getting you a great brand and design. We are a small and efficient company, we do all of our work locally, and we never outsource to overseas companies. My philosophy on this is simple – I do all I can to support local growth in my community and the internet is simply another business tool for our local economy. Our clients remain satisfied that we can personally offer them continued intimate support and service, maintaining and evolving their websites over time.

Maintenance.

This brings us to the final point in our process, maintenance. Once your website is complete we will have a final one hour consultation with you (if necessary) to instruct you on how to use your new and exciting dynamic site and system. Then you’re off and running, however we will always be here if you need help with system updates, further customization, or adding content…part of the added benefit of working local!

So I had been writing this big post about WordPress 3.0 coming out, and how we were so sneaky as to be running a release candidate on our site…Then we got busy and by the time I came back they went and released the final version! The new version 3.0 is called “Thelonious” after the great jazzman and purveyor of awesome hats I assume. I am going to try to do some specific feature updates as I encounter them while upgrading our small fleet of WordPress clients! Some of the most noteworthy additions I have been testing include the merging of MU (multiple user version) into the standard version. That and the new custom post types alone make this a pretty huge upgrade and really push WordPress closer to being the perfect full CMS solution. My only concern is the application will get too bloated, as they continue to add to it, so I am going to also run some speed tests to compare this new version. Results to follow shortly I promise!

If you have not seen “Straight No Chaser” the Monk documentary directed by Eastwood…I’d recommend it.

While WordPress obviously wasn’t initially designed to be a full featured CMS, and it still has a ways to go in competing with Drupal or Concrete, this is a great trick you can use to expand your ability to add content which is editable from the admin area. WordPress Custom Fields will allow you to add data below the post area when you are creating a post (or a page which uses “post” info basically). You can create a Custom Field “Name” and “Value”, the name is basically a key that you can use to call the content in your template…which is the great part of this as it allows you to place editable content outside of the main post area on a page. Here is a screen shot where you can see I have added two Custom Fields, one for a picture (I didn’t add the picture value yet, but you can add a pict via the main content area then just copy the HTML info and paste it in) and one for a quote the client wants to change on each page (click the thumb for full size).

You need to actually edit your templates a bit, but it is fairly easy. Once you have created your Custom Field Name and added some content (value) you can use the get_post_meta() (click here for more detailed info) function as demonstrated below, just swap out Custom Field name where indicated and you can place this in your template-

<?php $key=”YOUR CUSTOM FIELD NAME”; echo get_post_meta($post->ID, $key, true); ?>

You can play around with adding html in the custom field or your template to get styling correct. This is how it looks in my template where I want the quote to show up.

I also recently discovered a nifty plug-in which will add tinyMCE toolbar functionality to the Custom Fields! Very cool.

Wow! they really keep upping the bar with every new release of WordPress. This new one will feature a complete overhaul of the Admin area, which is definitely welcome. It really looks slick, and they have put a lot of thought into the layout and access of everything. The navigation has moved to the sidebar, and there is a host of expandable/collapsible windows providing space for access to more tools.
